What is a riddle?

A riddle is a short question that describes something in indirect words, and the answer is a single thing or word. The description usually points in one direction while the answer is found by looking at the words from another angle. Every riddle in this bank has an answer, and most have a one-sentence explanation.

How do you solve riddles?

Start by reading every word literally, then look for a second meaning. Ask what the riddle never says, because the puzzle often hides an assumption. For word riddles, look at the letters themselves. For example, “What is at the end of a rainbow?” has the answer W. For math riddles, write the numbers down. In the bat-and-ball riddle, the answer is not 10 cents: if the ball costs 5 cents, the bat costs $1.05, and the total is $1.10.

What are good riddles for kids?

Kids riddles are short and use everyday things and animals. They suit children from kindergarten to about age 8. Turn on ‘For kids’ and choose the Easy level to filter the bank. A good first example is “What has hands but cannot clap?” with the answer a clock.

What are good riddles for kindergarteners?

For young children, start with the ‘For kids’ toggle and the Easy level, then read each riddle aloud and let them guess. On the Print tab, ‘Large print (for young children)’ puts 4 cards on a page, which makes riddles easier to read and handle.

What are some hard riddles for adults?

Hard riddles use wordplay, logic and hidden assumptions. Choose the Hard level to see the 60 hardest riddles in the bank. A good test is “How many months of the year have 28 days?” The answer is all twelve, because every month has at least 28 days. Another is the bat-and-ball riddle above, where the quick answer of 10 cents is wrong.

Easy, funny, tricky or really hard: which riddles should you pick?

For young children, simple riddles about everyday things work best: the For kids filter and the Easy level suit 5, 6, 7 and 8 year olds, and they make good family friendly riddles for car trips. Funny riddles end in a pun, so they are the humorous and sometimes hilarious ones to read aloud. Tricky riddles with answers that hide an assumption, like the months riddle, sit in the Medium level. The Hard level holds the challenging, complicated and very tough riddles: clever wordplay and logic for teens and adults that are difficult to solve on the first try. None of them claims to be the hardest riddle in the world or on earth, but some of the best ones take a while. Riddles that look rare usually turn out to be classic riddles told in new words; Shuffle shows them in random order.

For a party, pick fun and cool riddles from Funny or What am I?; for a class, basic riddles with their answers on the Easy level. The funniest puns sit in Funny, and the toughest, super hard ones that feel almost impossible sit in Hard. Some of the best riddles ever are also the most famous and oldest, like the candle that is tall when young and short when old. Try to solve these puzzling ones before opening the answers: the moment it clicks is the great part, and extremely difficult riddles feel easy afterwards.

What is the riddle of the day?

The riddle of the day is shown at the top of the tool. It is a daily riddle, the same for everybody on a given date and is chosen from the whole bank. It changes at local midnight. Tap ‘Open in riddle cards’ to work on it with the full set of controls.

How are guesses checked?

Capital letters, punctuation and the words a, an and the are ignored, so “ice cream” matches “icecream”. For answers of 5 or more characters, one wrong, missing or extra letter still counts as right. Shorter answers must match exactly. Many riddles also accept other wordings of the answer, so a correct answer in different words can still count.
